The Role of Speech-Language Pathologists in the Lidcombe Program

As a speech-language pathologist, you guide families through the Lidcombe Program. From training parents to tracking progress, your expertise ensures the program is individualised and delivered with accuracy, consistency, and care.

Lidcombe Program Workshops

Members of the Lidcombe Program Trainers Consortium host workshops in many regions of the world. These events are open to speech-language pathologists.
Listed below are the forthcoming workshops. If you are interested in hosting a Lidcombe Program Workshop in your region, please contact us.
You may notice that the length of the Lidcombe Program Workshop varies in some places from the standard 2-day workshop. This is generally the case where the Lidcombe Program is new to the clinical community or where English is the second language and the presentation will need to be translated during the workshop.
Further Lidcombe Program training and information support sessions are organised on a local basis where consortium trained speech-language pathologists meet to discuss cases and local implementation issues, review recent Lidcombe Program research, and ask questions about specific client issues.

Research and Publications

What is the Lidcombe Program?

The Lidcombe Program is an evidence-based treatment, meaning it is grounded in rigorous scientific research. One key component of this research is clinical trials.
Studies conducted around the world, including randomised controlled trials, have
consistently shown that the Lidcombe Program is effective for children under six
years of age who stutter. It has also been shown to be effective for some children up to 12 years of age. These trials demonstrate that the program offers an excellent
chance of achieving little to no stuttering—and of maintaining that outcome over time.

Importantly, the Lidcombe Program has been shown to be effective when delivered by video telehealth. In this format, the speech-language pathologist and the family do not meet in person; instead, treatment is provided remotely with video conferencing platforms such as Zoom.
Research has also confirmed that the Lidcombe Program is safe. It does not negatively affect the parent-child relationship or other aspects of communication. In fact, many parents report that following treatment their children become more confident and talkative—likely due to the reduction or absence of stuttering. Lidcombe Program research supports this with evidence of reduced anxiety, improved attitude to communication, and improved quality of life after the treatment.
