About the Lidcombe Program

What is the Lidcombe Program?

The Lidcombe Program is a behavioural treatment designed for young children who stutter, under the age of six, though it can also be used with school-aged children. The program is delivered by a parent or caregiver during the child’s daily routines, with guidance from a speech pathologist. Parents attend weekly sessions where they are taught how to carry out the treatment and are supported in applying it at home.

What is stuttering?

Stuttering is a speech motor disorder that causes interruptions in the flow of speech. This may include repeating sounds or words, stretching out sounds, or difficulty starting a word. There may also be visible signs of effort or tension during speech. The severity of stuttering varies—some individuals stutter only occasionally, while others experience it on most words.
